Informations on the ability of tree crops to reduce nutrient leaching and retrieve water and nutrients from the subsoil. We investigated (i) the soil water dynamics of a Xanthic Ferralsol to a soil depth pf 4m om prder tp evaluate (ii) the extent of rapid water precolation into the subsoil, (iii) the effect of different indigenous tree crops on soil water contentes, and (iv) the movement of applied 15N with the soil solution under the different tree crops and leguminous cover crop during one rainy season. Additionally, two different methods for the calculation of water fluxes were compared and in the last step water percolation and nitrogen leaching losses were quantified during one rainhy season. The study was carried out at the Embrapa Amazonia ocidental experimental station on the terra firme near Manaus (Amazonas-Brasil). |
